When this assignment was explained to us I was immediately drawn to the Utopia collage. Here in the real world, sometimes this rock floating through space doesn't feel very utopias so it felt very freeing to create a space that includes only things I find beautiful and comforting. When I thought of the word 'utopia' and what that would look like, I immediately pictured and oasis. Coincidently, a band I'm a huge fan of just recently released a music video that takes place in the desert (check it out if u want :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoQ85cs5fk0 ). It felt like the perfect setting for my oasis wonderland and who am I kidding, of course my utopia would have all of my favorite artists. I also combined this desert still with some photos I've taken myself, like of the clouds at sunset and a pride flag because of course my utopia would be a queer space, combined with stock images I found to spruce up the place. In the end, I'm really happy with my dream world and I hope somewhere in some timeline I am able to live in my utopia.

For this assignment we were to try one of our classmates chance operation systems and write a little about it. I chose MJ's because their idea reminded me a lot of a cootie catcher or paper fortune teller.

MJ's instructions:

1. Choose a color.

a. Pink

b. Blue

c. Purple

d. Red

e. Green

f. Yellow

2. Choose an emotion

a. Happy

b. Sad

c. Confused

d. Angry

3. What is your sign?

Aries = Bunny

Taurus = Guinea pig

Gemini = penguin

Cancer = hedgehog

Leo = panda

Virgo = axolotl

Libra = frog

Scorpio = cat

Sagittarius = cow

Capricorn = dog

Aquarius = coy fish

Pisces = duck

4. Go to google, search the emotion and the animal, then choose the 5th photo that shows up in images

5. Trace over the photo with the color you chose

6. That’s it :)

My Result:

Artist's Statement: I chose purple because it is my favorite color. The emotion I feeling at the time was sadness, it had been a rough day, and my sign is Leo so I drew a panda. The 5th photo of a sad panda was a panda hanging out in a tree. I really enjoyed this project because it made me feel better to look at a cute animal and also it was very simple and relaxing to trace over an image. I used Procreate on my iPad so it was very easy to load up the photo and trace it. I think this would be a great way to get out tough emotions on rough days or express happy emotions on good days.

Thanks MJ :)

For a Unique and creative game of Cards Against Humanity. This chance operation is sort of as if Cards Against Humanity and Pictionary had a baby. You play like a regular game of Cards Against Humanity (instructions here) but the catch is you will be sketching the white card of your choice within 90 seconds. Now, Cards Against Humanity can come up with some pretty interesting cards, so detail to your liking. After 90 seconds, everyone will give their drawings and cards to the Card Czar who will then pick the drawing they think is the funniest.

For an Advanced Version, the Card Czar can try to guess what card prompt the drawing is.

Materials needed:

  • Drawing utensils (i.e. crayon, oil pastel, pens)

  • Paper

  • Cards Against Humanity white deck or Cards Against Humanity online generator

For my results, I used this website https://grack.com/demos/rando/ to generate a random hand of Cards Against Humanity cards. The white card I drew was simply 'God.' and this was my best sketch of my depiction of God.
